We’ve gotten down to editing Covenant’s playtest rules in earnest this week. Click below the fold for more.

Editing a roleplaying game is a lot harder than just red-penning a bunch of pages, it turns out.

We have edited 83 out of 294 pages. Some parts, like the Basics of Play chapter, didn’t change all that much from the previous draft. Other parts we were able to cut out completely from the rules, because either they don’t fit the “minimum viable product” character of the rules right now or we’re going to add them later as species and domain abilities. That saved a lot of time.

We’ve finished those easy parts, though. Everything after page 80 – in other words, what we started editing tonight – is going to need heavy rewriting. This is a slow process, and we’ve had lots of ideas for the game since the last draft. We want to get them in, and that means re-arranging everything around them.

Still, we think we’re on schedule for the playtest rules’ Feb. 28, 2021 deadline. The more work we put into editing, the less we’ll need to put into the next step, which is rewriting everything. So we want to put as much work into this stage as we can.

Talk to you next week!
