Vocabulary of the Orion Arm: The R’s

Vocabulary of the Orion Arm is back! We left off on the P’s and Q’s, and since there are so many S words, we’re going to focus on the R’s today. Click through for more.

  • Radosty (valka, slang): Joy. From Nadsat, derived from radost (joy).
  • Raskazz (valka, slang): Story. From Nadsat, derived from rasskaz (story).
  • Rasoodock (valka, slang): Mind, thinking, cognition. From Nadsat, derived from rassudok (sanity, common sense).
  • Rat (general, slang): Racial slur for valka.
  • Ratfucking (slang, general): 1. Political sabotage. 2. Cannibalizing parts, kitbashing.
  • Raz (valka, slang): Time. From Nadsat, derived from raz (occasion).
  • Razdrez (valka, slang): Upset. From Nadsat, derived from razdrazhat (to irritate).
  • Razrez (valka, slang): Rip, tear. From Nadsat, derived from razrvat (to rip).
  • Reef (aco,slang): Touch. From British Polari.
  • Refugee Nation (slang, general): A term for the cultures on archipelago fleets. Many are evacuation fleets that date back to the destruction of Earth, which were often organized by nation or region. The cultures on these fleets tend to be cargo cultish and highly xenophobic, with their nations of origin viewed as prelapsarian paradises. They also tend to carry on the rivalries of their long-dead nations, though the reasons for these rivalries have been lost. See also archipelago, gypsy fleet, and nostalgism.
  • Regal Trifle (chiroptim, slang): Rifle. An example of chiroptim rhyming slang.
  • Remould (aco,slang): 1. Sex change. 2. Cybernetic surgery or genetic modification. From British Polari.
  • Rescue (Covenant, slang): Any recent immigrant, especially one with heavy psychological problems. The implication is that they act like an abused animal from an animal shelter.
  • Riah (aco,slang): Hair, fur. From British Polari. Also riha.
  • Riah Zhoosher (aco,slang): Hairdresser. From British Polari.
  • Rich Wine (chiroptim, slang): Innuendo for blood that’s to be consumed.
  • Rooker (valka, slang): Hand. From Nadsat, derived from ruka (hand).
  • Rot (valka, slang): Mouth. From Nadsat, derived from rot (mouth).
  • Rozz (valka, slang): Policeman. From Nadsat, derived from rozha (ugly face or grimace).
  • Rozzer (aco,slang): Policeman. From British Polari.
  • Rough Trade (aco,slang): 1. A violent or abusive sex partner. 2. Sex work that’s street-based or through ads, which has a greater chance of dangerous johns. From British Polari.
  • “Rush B no stop!” (valka, slang): Hurry up, speed is essential. The origins of this phrase are lost to the sands of time.
